You’ve Got A Friend

I sang this song for a talent show when I was in middle school. I woke up hearing it. The words have always gripped me. I have a heavy heart today, but I’ll be fine. I know that my heart has an amazing capacity to love and it’s more inclusive than exclusive. I see that as a tremendous benefit and Coach said it’s a gift. I should never take that gift for granted.

To D and J…thank you! I so wish I could share more about me with you. I wish you could read this blog. You know I have it, but have never pushed to read it because you allow me the opportunity to say what I need to say into the Universe. I know you wouldn’t judge, but I would never risk anything coming between us. I love you both too much to do such a thing.

J, we’ve known each other since we were 13 (35 years!), when I met you on our first day of high school. We were instant friends. My nickname is Elle because of you. You get my warped humor, the humor I don’t show on this blog, and you just get me. We partied till we dropped, danced until dawn more times than I can count, laughed, cried, and supported each other all these years. I’m checking my lottery numbers because I promised I’d buy you a Jaguar one of these days and I always keep my promises.

D, your wisdom is beyond most people’s comprehension. We were instant friends from the moment I made that fateful call and you answered the phone. You are the older sister I never had. Our age difference means nothing to us. You always call at the exact moment of my pain or joy. How do you do that? How are you so tuned in to the extremes of my heart? Everyone is confused by our friendship because no one in a million years would expect us to be friends. We seem so opposite, but that’s because they only see the outside. On the inside, we’re cut from the same bolt of cloth. We’ve never had one single disagreement in the 13 years we’ve been friends. I am a better person when I’m with you. You bring out the very best in me. You are in a class all your own.

When you’re down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothin’, nnothin’ is goin’ right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come runnin’ to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I’ll be there
You’ve got a friend

If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you’ll hear me knockin’ at your door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come runnin’, runnin, yeah, yeah,
to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I’ll be there, yes I will

Now ain’t it good to know
that you’ve got a friend
When people can be so cold
They’ll hurt you, yes, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh, but don’t you let them.

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come runnin, runnin’, yeah, yeah, yeah
to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I’ll be there, yes I will
You’ve got a friend,
you’ve got a friend,
ain’t it good to know,
you’ve got a friend,
ain’t it good to know,
ain’t it good to know,
ain’t it good to know,
you’ve got a friend,
oh yeah now, you’ve got a friend,
yeah baby, you’ve got a friend,
oh yeah, you’ve got a friend.

  1. How lovely to have such good friends, even better that you know it and cherish them through the ether. I am sorry about your heavy heart. To love hard is to hurt hard – sometimes. Sending a hug.

    • Thank you for the hug…I’ll take it. Change is a good thing. Sometimes you just have to move on. My close friends have proven that they will always be there no matter what and I woke up with a renewed appreciation for them.

  2. Sending you love and peace today. Friends are a rare and precious commodity to be cherished. I don’t know what finds you with a heavy heart but know that the capacity to feel great pain and hurt also blesses you with the capacity feel great compassion and joy. You will be fine because life has taught you the art of survival. With total faith in you…..thm

    • Thank you, thm. I just wish people well. Sometimes you try and your best just isn’t good enough, but you live, you learn, you move on to new experiences and challenges and I welcome that with open arms. Sometimes you have to let some old things go in order to be able to receive the new.

    • These two are a blessings. One lives in NY, knows my hard past and was there with me through it all. We are both amazed that we’re still alive and have our brain cells relatively in tact. The other can relate to my past, lives in my city, and knows me for who I am today. She never falters and I live her dearly.

  3. Hugs, Elle–this happens to be one of my very, very favorites. When one of my daughter’s friends knew it and Carole King, I was delighted this continues to speak to all generations (and I vowed I’d never again be cowed by my kids complaining about “my music!”).

Friends are such a blessing, to be sure. I have a few who are so far away, but (another great Carole song!) it would be so fine to see (their)face at my door…. and we always pick up wherever we left off.

Be well, and hope tomorrow is sunnier!

  4. Ahh Yes the Tapestry album. Nothing can bring back memories of great, fun, amazing, crazy times with friends than listening to Carol king. I gave this song printed up and framed to a best friend I had for over twenty years. When she couldn’t understand me or my life anymore I had to let her go.

What you have are two friends that love you. There is nothing like have a couple of great girlfriends to lift you up when you’re feeling down. I hope they know that Of course your Sir, Coach comes first. That’s just a given. True friends stand by you no matter what.

You are an amazing woman just the way the way you are Elle. Keep that head held high, Hugs

    • It’s been an up and down week. Figured out the problem so that’s a good thing, but still feeling like garbage. I love my dear friends to pieces. I’m blessed to have long time friends, but there are some things I just can’t tell them. I so wish they really knew this part of me. Coach always comes first and knows me completely.

    • Awww, thank you for saying that. I said those exact words to them so they know how I feel without having to read it here. We joke around about being low-maintenance friends. I think it’s because we’re secure enough in the friendship that we never have to worry about it going away.
