He Called Me Kiddo

I am doing some personal assistant work one day a week for a new client. He’s actually one of Coach’s clients and now he’s hired me to help him get organized in his business and home life. I helped out at one of his stores last week and today I was at his home. He and his wife had several projects for me, from going to one of the houses he’s flipping and putting together a lighting needs breakdown to purchasing him a temporary out of state hunting license for a big hunting trip he’s taking next week. I’m good with these task and over a two day period I’ve knocked out an impressive list. I got very excited on the drive back to his house and couldn’t help thinking, “I hope he likes the frames I chose. Are my lighting recommendations going to work with his plan?” And then it hit me, I freaking get off on this! I was even a little nervous.

Once back, I gave him everything he needed. He was extremely pleased and I was glowing. As I was leaving for the day, he told me how much of a help I’ve been and how glad he is for our new arrangement. Then he said, “Good job, kiddo.” I almost tripped on his steps. I feel no attraction to this man, who’ s only nine years older than me, but I will tell you, I just loved hearing those words!

    • How could that possibly offend me? Cute, huh?

I haven’t been called kiddo in a long, long time. He’s got daughters in college and he’s 6’4″ so I suppose it’s a default word for him once he’s comfortable enough with someone. It just took me by surprise.

  1. Only my grandmother got away with that…actually it was welcomed. I had a colleague who was 12 years my senior and I was his manager. Yep, whenever I gave him his assignments or tasks, I treated him with the utmost respect. He would respond, “you bet, kiddo.” He only did this in front of the rest of my team or within earshot of a colleague, so it was quite obvious that it was meant in a demeaning manner. I confronted him and told him to please stop. He didn’t, seemingly turning things up.

Layoff time rolled around and you can probably guess who was sitting at the top of the sayonara list.

I am not a kid but I don’t exactly look old, either.

  2. Oh sweet mother of terms of endearment, LOL… Keeps you coming back for more, right? I dare say, miss Elle, I believe you’ve found a terrific niché?! And yes, too cute for words, just sayin! 😉

  3. Basically, he called you good girl…so yeah, I bet you did like it. Even if there is no attraction there. I know I love receiving approval for a job well done…almost as much as I love checking off a to-do list. 😉

    • That’s what I’m thinking, Kayla. Our subbie selves really crave this. LOVED checking off the list 🙂

My last client sucked at compliments and got really bitchy over 2 years. Not a good experience for me and she used to be a friend, too 😦

      • The thing that will kill my motivation to work hard for someone is lack of gratitude and appreciation. I’ll keep working hard but I become more and more miserable over time.

If I’m appreciated for a job well done, that’s as important to me as the pay I receive. I have accepted a lack of pay raises over the years from employers who genuinely appreciated what I did.

Now that I can choose who to work with and for, I won’t stay with anyone too long if they can’t show their appreciation for what I do.

  4. I think we all love being appreciated. An “atta-boy” was always enjoyed by me (atta-girl would have made me uncomfortable) regardless of who gave it. But my position in work was always well-defined so if an underling ever said it to me it was obviously meant with a grin, a nod, and a wink.

Well done on the job and career, Elle. I would love to be able to afford you. My life needs organizing.

    • But “atta girl” would have made you laugh.

I will see how I can parlay this into more of a career. Need to put together a business plan and see how I can market it. You know, a personal assistant can be for short term projects. You need to weigh out what you need done in order to increase productivity. Your goal is to increase your productivity, which should result in a gain in revenue. You can then afford a short term personal assistant. You will have long term gains putting things in order and it will be well worth the expense.

  5. Gratitude and appreciation in a work setting? How great would that be!! I can’t remember the last time it happened. I had a friend post recently that the team is the death of the individual. I keep running into that. To be praised EVER would be such a treat! You go girl! Well done.

  6. It’s amazing how just a few well chosen words spoken at the right time and in the right tone can truly wash over you like a huge sunbeam. Bless those folks who know how to make others feel good about themselves. In this very ego-centric world, it’s become a rare commodity. I have been enormously blessed with amazing bosses over the years who have made me feel like a million bucks. And, of course it’s very special when you’ve truly earned it by your work ethic and expertise. Kudos!!
